Hot Goblins and Unicorns: Em Beihold Brings Tales of a Failed Shapeshifter to Minneapolis

6.5.26 - Minneapolis, MN

A smattering of unicorn horns, pointy ears, and green body paint covered the pit floor for Em Beihold’s concert Fine Line in Minneapolis on June 5, 2026. Though an odd combo, all of these are references to Beihold’s debut album, Tales of a Failed Shapeshifter, which tells the story of her life after "Numb Little Bug" went viral in 2022. More than halfway through her tour, Beihold has cemented her place in pop music and is more than just one viral hit.

Janani K. Jha opened the show with her strong vocals and songs, which were heavily inspired by Greek mythology. She took the stage with an admirable cool confidence, and her songs had a jazz-infused pop vibe. The crowd listened attentively while others were passionately scream-singing along to the words, earning smiles and waves from Jha. The middle of her set was dedicated to an acoustic set where Jha played songs that were fan requests. She played “Prometheus on the 405” and “Machine Learning" during this portion. Jha even treated the crowd with a new song, Jack Kerouac," inspired by a crush who gave her a Jack Kerouac book before he embarked on a long road trip. Jha’s ability to connect with the crowd through her songs made for an excellent opening to the night. Anyone into Greek mythology should check out her album, The Rest of the Laurels.

In between the Jha and Beihold, Fine Line has a projector showing upcoming artists playing at the venue. Each time Beihold appeared on the screen, the fans cheered loudly in anticipation for the night. Finally, when the screen lifted, Beihold gracefully stepped out on stage. Kicking off the night with “Scared of the Dark," Beihold played the keyboard near the back of the stage. Throughout the night, she alternated between playing the keyboard and singing and dancing around the front of the stage. This versatility gave Beihold an opportunity to preserve her energy for the times when she was running around the stage with the self-proclaimed "zoomies."

Before playing “Shiny New Things," Beihold teased the crowd with “Numb Little Bug." The fans would have to put in the work for the rest of the show before hearing that one. The packed venue was fully attentive and singing the whole show. Beihold’s humor and personality were a shining moment of the night. She managed to make everyone in Fine Line feel welcomed and comfortable like they were watching their friend perform for the night.

During "Exorcism," Beihold reunited with a fan who had written her a letter years ago. Together they performed a duet of the song. Even though there was a mishap with when to start, the two continued on seamlessly and sounded great together. The loud cheers of encouragement only brought the fan more confidence as the song progressed.

Two of the songs that got the most cheers from the audience were “Soup!” and "Goo." Near the end of her set, each of these songs continued to bring the energy. There wasn’t a moment where the crowd wasn’t singing, and as Beihold pointed her microphone out to the fans, it was obvious they were showing off just how good of a crowd they were.

Before Beihold started her next song, she let everyone know the impact of touring on her voice and took a moment to go offstage to cough, but not before telling us her band members could play bluegrass on the spot. Her band members dove right into “Back Up and Push” by Kenny Baker. It was quite impressive and a great way to keep everyone engaged while she took a moment to herself.

Beihold closed out her regular set with “Hot Goblin," and she thanked everyone who came out in full green body and face paint. Those fans were singing the loudest and proudest of the whole crowd.

It wouldn’t be an Em Beihold show without “Numb Little Bug." As she stepped off the stage before the encore song, fans chanted “One more song” until Beihold came back. The audience had clearly been waiting for the song since she teased it at the start and showed it by outsinging Beihold herself. Beihold’s show ended with a bang, and everyone, Beihold and band included, left the night glowing.
