On their first headline tour throughout the United States and Canada, Sorry Ghost finally brought their Insufferably Indie tour to New York. Many fans–myself included–were lined up early to get a good view for Sorry Ghost’s first time in New York.
The night started off strong with support from Kevin Walkman, who had been on tour with Sorry Ghost since late September. During Kevin’s set, the crowd was entirely focused on the music, rather than talking over him like some people tend to do during the opener. Despite not knowing the lyrics to his songs, the crowd gave Kevin the most energy I have ever seen for an opening act. At the end of his set, Kevin brought up Tate Silver, the drummer of Sorry Ghost, to join him in a cover of “Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheatus.

After an amazing opening set from Kevin Walkman, fans waited excitedly for Sorry Ghost to start their set. Before coming out, the screen behind the stage lit up, displaying The Dog from the YouTube video “Dog of Wisdom” from 2015, which stayed on screen throughout the set. Once they were finally on stage, the band started their set off with one of their more recent singles, “starring me (as myself).” Rocking their way through the set, fans echoed the lyrics to every song back at them.
Eventually, the show got to a point where both Matthew and Sean, the guitarists of the band, each had broken strings on their guitars from rocking too hard. Despite missing strings and not having backup guitars, they powered through the remaining songs on the setlist, like “robin” and “marathons.” For the “encore,” Matthew came out as his alter ego, Atticus, who was an insufferably indie guy the rest of the band hated, which the lead singer Daniel made very clear to the crowd.

After the “encore,” fans chanted for “one more song.” After returning to the stage, Sorry Ghost performed one extra song, “DRAGONFRUIT,” as an actual encore. Despite not having practiced, the crowd screamed the lyrics back to them and the band rocked their way through the final song, reminding everyone that it would be a little messy since they had missing strings and had not planned to play the extra song. Even with it being messy, the added song made for an extremely special night.
