Suki Waterhouse “The Loveland Tour” Opening Night

Loveland comes to life in Suki Waterhouse’s brand-new tour, The Loveland Tour. Fittingly, since she mentions Arizona in the title track of the album “Loveland,” she kicked off her tour in Phoenix, Arizona. With this new tour, Suki has completely upgraded her movements, style, and set. The whole show is a magical, aesthetically beautiful display of her commitment to the theme of her new album.
An anatomical heart mirror ball with arrows shot through it acts as the centerpiece of the stage. Also dawning the stage are more giant arrows, even covering the top of her grand piano. The show begins with “Over the Rainbow” while heartbeats and red lights flashed through the sheer, billowy curtains that enclose the stage. In front of the heart, Suki begins the show by performing a choreographed sequence with a large arrow, where she pretends the arrow is shot through her chest. Within the first few songs, curtains in the back peel open to reveal what Loveland truly looks like. Rolling hills straight out of a fantasy movie mixed with Los Angeles-esque palm trees.

Throughout the show, Suki’s movements are dramatic and campy, truly selling the idea of mysticism in Loveland. Suki is the epitome of a cool girl, and the stage only exemplifies her effortless chic style. She began the show in a skintight silver body suit paired with bright purple boots, an outfit only someone as cool as her could pull off. Then, with a dramatic pause halfway through the show, she changed into a more casual outfit, featuring a piece of customized merchandise from the tour.
She spends majority of the show on a platform in front of the mirror heart in the middle of the stage. The platform allows the entire audience to be able to see Suki, and her dramatic movements help fill the empty space on stage. She occasionally got down from this platform to walk across the front of the stage, where she often engaged with fans by pointing, smiling, and even taking gifts from fans.
As to be expected for an opening night, there were a few timing issues and technical difficulties. Most notably was an issue during “Jukebox,” where the band forgot to come in, leaving the track to feel empty and strange. However, Suki handled these issues like a pro, rarely letting them affect her energy.
As it is The Loveland Tour, majority of the setlist is comprised of newer songs. However, fan favorites such as “Johanna,” “Good Looking Boy,” and “Moves” made their way on to the setlist. Notable new songs include “Puppy Dog Eyes,” which picks up the pace and creates more of a rock tone across the setlist, and “Happy With It,” where Suki performs a small dance with her band in the chorus. The show ends with “To Love,” leaving the show with a bang when the explosive bridge hits.
Suki has truly stepped into her own with this new tour. Her production perfectly fits the larger venues she has booked across the nation, and her stage presence is commanding. She perfectly balances her showmanship with engaging the crowd, making each person feel as though she’s looking at them.
