Youtube’s Johnnie Guilbert teams up with Sueco for Right Girl, Wrong Time

I am not really a fan of Johnnie Guilbert. I’ve heard of him for years, stemming from My Digital Escape, and my teenage sister has occasionally put on one of his videos. Heard his music in passing on TikTok and have stopped to listen to a couple but I don’t have them on my playlists. Sueco, on the other hand, I am a fan of. I’ve been to a couple of his shows and I quite like Attempted Lover. So, when a collaboration between the two was announced, I was pretty skeptical but I didn’t write it off immediately.

But, I do. It’s a pretty fun, pop punk (heavy on the pop) number that reminds me of a song you would’ve heard on your older brothers playlist in 2007-2009. Which makes sense when you notice Mike Green in the producer credits, known for songs off of Pierce the Veil’s Selfish Machines (2010) and some Neck Deep songs. The other producer, kodeblooded, I was less familiar with, but then found I’d heard him on Sueco’s “love and rage”. Overall, this song does feel incredibly evocative and referential to other Warped Tour acts and the sort of pop-punk romance songs you would hear from it.

However, this song  runs into the issue I find with much of Guilbert’s work- the lyrics are kind of surface level. This is seen mainly in the chorus, with the line “She could be my Snow White but I'm Snowblind”. But this isn’t a dramatic ballad or a comeback single, it’s a Johnnie Guilbert and Sueco song, so I don’t feel like there is an expectation of complicated and “deep” lyrics. They function well to tell the story of a singer whose falling for a girl but self-sabotages- see: “God I was so dumb hitting decline / Wish that I could go back hit thе rewind”. The sort of simple lyrics work for this song, I would just love to see more introspection from Guilbert in the future.

The instrumentals are quite simple in this song around 2 minute run time, underlying the sort of simple lyrics well. It’s the sort of fun, catchy song that wouldn’t be out of place in a summer festival lineup and I wouldn’t be surprised if  these two were to bring it to the Long Beach stop of Warped tour during Sueco’s set.  Overall, fans of these two will enjoy this song.
