A New Side of Fog Lake with Single “Bogus”

Album cover by Corey Mastrangelo

Fog Lake returns to the music scene with the release of a single ahead of his newest album Hollowbody. Showing us a more refined side of the Newfoundland artist is “Bogus,” an engulfing, reflective track that introduces us to this new stage of Fog Lake.

Aaron Powell has this way of making music that somehow always feels nostalgic and full of emotion; this single is no different. Something about the way he uses instruments to manipulate space creates this environment that swallows you whole as you listen, bringing you into the world of the song.

The guitars specifically have such a full sound in this one, but there is a surprising lack of their signature fuzzy, lo-fi tone. Powell partly attributes this clearer, brighter sound to a vintage piece of equipment he found on eBay. A 1980s Tascam amp simulator was used during the recording of this LP, which he says played a major role in how the feel and sound of the music turned out.

Powell worked with Warren Hildebrand, professionally known as Foxes in Fiction, on the production and mixing of this album, which also influenced the outcome of the music. Hildebrand was able to enhance the music even more, giving us the highest fidelity Fog Lake project to date. Hildebrand co-directed the music video for the track with Michael Hansford of Molly Drag, giving us glimpses of Powell in the wild: both in and out of the studio.

This single embodies everything I love about Fog Lake and gives me even more things to admire. That inherent feeling of nostalgia mixed with warm, vibrant guitars and instrumentals is exactly the type of tune I crave. I can guarantee that this song will soundtrack my autumn days as I wait for the release of the whole album, Hollowbody, on November 13th.
