Blossoms Are Bringing Fun Back With “Songs From The Wedding Cake”

Blossoms have released their 6th album, Songs From The Wedding Cake, declaring a new era for the band.

The album is deeply rooted in an 80’s influence, apparent in the musical elements of songs like “Husband” and “Additional Driver.” “Husband” features a Talking Heads style intro and outro that fade into a usual Blossoms style acoustic guitar heavy chorus. “Additional Driver” includes an INXS style guitar track in the chorus and futuristic synths throughout the whole song.

The production on this album is one of the most noteworthy elements. Each song is expertly produced to enhance and push each song’s distinct sound to its best version. “Meet Me In Love” features a funky bass line that booms throughout the song, accompanied by stacked vocals that fill the track. “The Deep End” also features a similar use of vocals, choosing a 70’s style reverb that enhances the jazz lounge sound to the final track.

Music videos are also a crucial part to this album as they bring the colorful sound to life with bright colors, quirky scenes, and celebrity cameos. “Husband” features Jack O’Connell, while “Meet Me In Love” features Maya Jama. These videos help push the whimsical atmosphere of the album with their 60’s looking scenes.

Songs From The Wedding Cake features a new writing style for Blossoms. They balance funny lyrics with real, serious topics, typically about marriage and relationships. “The Kardashians” is the pinnacle of this style where the title of the song comes from the lyric “so hungover, caught you cryin’ at The Kardashians,” while the rest of the song focuses on being deeply in love with someone. “Fall Into You” is one of the songs on the album that disrupts this new lively writing, due to serious vocals that describe the recklessness that comes with falling in love.

Throughout this new album, Blossoms champion their talented friends. Declan Mckenna is featured on “Additional Driver,” alongside doing background vocals on songs like “Meet Me In Love,” while Elijah Hewson from Inhaler is featured on “Where Have You Been All My Life?” and Rick Astley does background vocals on “Joke About Divorce.” Overall, Blossoms incorporates their friends into their tracks and make them feel crucial to the song, rather than simply throwing them on the track. For instance, Declan’s vocals on “Additional Driver” add a fun, carefree sound, while Elijah adds an emotional tone to “Where Have You Been All My Life?.”

Songs From The Wedding Cake is all around fun to listen to and a true representation of how superior indie pop music is when it’s done incredibly well.
