Sapphic Yearning as a Song: Nep’s “Girls on TV”

One of the absolutely gorgeous promotional pictures for “Girls on TV”

If you’re a fan of Ricky Montgomery, you may already be familiar with Miami native Nep. That’s how I was introduced to her last October, when she opened for his St. Petersburg stop at Jannus Live. She delivered such an exuberant and memorable set that I couldn’t get her unreleased songs, “Florida Girl” and “Cottontail, out of my head for days. Since then, I’ve followed her on social media, patiently waiting for either track to be released. That time has finally come with the release of her 2025 single, “Girls on TV.”

Nep describes her sound as a blend of lo-fi-based acoustic songs and indie rock, and “Girls on TV” fully embodies that fusion. From the opening electronic “Ah, ah, ah” vocals, I’m completely hooked. While this track strays from Nep’s typically stripped-back instrumentals, the shift works perfectly. The fuller production and layered vocals invite you into a dreamy, sapphic fantasy, one that feels intimate and cinematic.

I’d heard it live before the release and caught clips teased on her Instagram, but the fully produced version exceeds all expectations. It’s so catchy and fun that “I was watching you through your window last night / Short skirt, high socks, light breeze” has been stuck in my head since yesterday—(making me sound like a light-level stalker).

Nep released her first EP last year, and “Girls on TV” is a strong follow-up. If you’re looking for a new artist to obsess over, give it a listen. For now, we wait patiently for the official release of “Florida Girl, and keep streaming the rest of Nep’s discography.
