Indie Rock Group, Mossheads, Release Sophomore Single: “Ramona”

If you’re looking to start listening to a band that hasn’t blown up yet, look no further than Tampa’s own Mossheads. This five-piece band has 608 monthly listeners on Spotify. They state their sound is inspired by bands like The Strokes and Radiohead. Their newest single, "Ramona” comes out September 5th and they gave us early access to it for this review.

“Don’t forget your stuff / somewhere in town / I didn’t hide it, / just to make you stick around”.
— My personal favorite line from the chorus

Ramona” begins with an immediate fake-out opening before crunchy guitars kick in and the vocalist starts with the line “In the summer / The days take too long, just to end.” The irony of releasing this as summer comes to an end isn’t lost on me, and I wonder if this was purposeful to bring the listener in on the wistful, almost reflective aspect of the lyrics. These lyrics seem to set the scene for the singer to reflect on his missed opportunity with the titular Ramona, who appears to have moved away from their hometown and ended their relationship. The crunchy rhythm guitar is paired with an almost harp-like, clear lead guitar. This combines with the smoky, lower vocals in the mix to create a sound that is reminiscent of the 2010s Indie rock take on post-punk. So much so that while listening, I kept saying, “Who does this remind me of (Answer: Franz Ferdinand).

I thoroughly enjoyed “Ramona” and for a second official song ever, I must say that Mossheads seems super promising. If you’re in Tampa and you’re looking for something to do tonight, they’re even playing a release show at local venue, The Orpheum. If you’re not close at all to Tampa, maybe just go to their Spotify and listen to “Ramona” and their other single, “Easy”.
