The 2010s Pop Revival: Lucy Bright’s “Honey”

In preparing for her fall tour of some of New York City’s most iconic venues, Atlanta-raised pop-soul artist Lucy Bright has teamed up with rapper Raimon with the new single “Honey,” a flirtatious pop anthem straight out of 2014.

Within the first few seconds of listening, “Honey” is immediately reminiscent of My Everything era Ariana Grande, complete with evocative background vocal arrangements and plentiful adlib riffing. Bright’s voice molds the message of the music, bringing a low breathiness to verses before returning to each chorus with clean runs and an easy confidence. 

The song’s rap verse also brings some nostalgia as it begins with Raimon delivering lines over synth strings akin to those in Clean Bandit’s “Rather Be.” As the verse continues on, both rap and vocal work together. Raimon’s declaration: “some say it’s bittersweet but honey’s slow delight” is echoed with Bright’s backing vocals before breaking back down to the chorus.

A simple, catchy, and repetitive melodic hook makes the chorus an ideal candidate for an earworm and you’ll find yourself singing along as Bright riffs in the background. “Honey” is the perfect portal back to simpler times of early social media, the ice bucket challenge, and skinny jeans.
