Do you like My Chemical Romance? Do you like to reminisce of the MySpace, early 00’s emo scene? Look no further than Manchester based ‘Northwest Emo’ 3 piece When Suddenly who have just unleashed brand new single “Shrek Money” that takes you back to that nostalgic time of knee high converse, checked sweatbands, belts and hoodies, long fringes and plastering your bedroom walls in Kerrang posters.
The single sums absolutely everything there is to love about this band. The intro hooks you straight away and gives out instant throwback feels to sitting in your room with friends playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater listening to countless amounts of CD’s. The overall feelgood factor elevates it from the get go. The vocals from JP and Daniel flow so well and both just bounce off each other incredibly. Anytime I have caught this band live one of the things the instantly catch my eye is the insane drum work from Zach - this is fully backed up in their recorded work and especially this single, you can feel the energy and sheer power of his skill through the speakers.
The single is partnered with a music video, directed by Abbie Flaherty fits the vibe perfectly. Filmed in one of Manchester’s independent and best music venues, it captures that underground pop punk feel this band give out, not only that but its fun to watch and see how much the band enjoy filming, I mean who else will openly dance with pitch forks and eat what I can only assume is raw onions - I know the song title has Shrek in it but c’mon guys, that’s just nasty.
When Suddenly just seem to go from strength to strength in each single and this one is certainly a big hitter straight off the bat. The trio are building their momentum at a rapid pace and deserve every bit of credit heading their way.
