Zara Larsson’s latest album release Midnight Sun is pure glittering pop perfection. This is her fifth album but Larsson brings a fresh look on what it means to be a pop girl. Coming in at just under 32 minutes with 10 tracks, Midnight Sun is Larsson’s shortest album yet.

While Zara Larsson is known for hits like “Lush Life” and “Never Forget You”, the title track “Midnight Sun” has climbed to number three on her Spotify rankings. The title track doubles as the opening song and encapsulates the energy for the rest of the album.

The curated Y2K aesthetic shines through in the outro at the end of “Blue Moon” and the cheer-style shouting in “Pretty Ugly” and “Hot & Sexy”. Every song has a catchy hook, line, or bridge drawing the listener in. “Pretty Ugly” especially stands out, with its energetic shouting bridge that is incredibly enjoyable to sing along to.

Many of the tracks deliver positive self-love messages, but the fourth track “Girl’s Girl” contradicts what the title implies. Larsson is messy and unapologetic about her feelings. She knows she shouldn't have feelings for her friend's boyfriend, but cannot control how she feels even though she knows she is betraying her longtime friend.

The penultimate track, “Saturn’s Return”, is a freeing and spacious song that ties in beautifully with the space-themed album title. Larsson embraces time and growth as she reflects on insecurities and becomes mature throughout life. It differs from the other tracks with its boundless instrumentals and slower, steady feel.

Midnight Sun is cohesive, upbeat, and concise. Larsson nails the sunny vibe while staying true to her sound. She is honest with herself throughout the album, exploring a range of emotions and experiences. Self-love radiates through many of her songs and the album as a whole is intoxicating. Midnight Sun is a pop staple, quick listen, and full of personality.
