Moontour is Leading the Arizona Indie Scene

Moontour is proving why they’re one of the best underground bands with their latest Arizona tour. They played to a nearly sold-out, ecstatic crowd at Crescent Ballroom in Downtown Phoenix on September 18th.  

The setlist consisted mostly of songs from their latest album, Don’t Break, including a few older songs and even an unreleased song. Fittingly, the songs from Don’t Break also included the biggest reactions from the crowd. This was apparent from the beginning of the show when the intro of the second song, “Don’t Break," the title track of their last album, kicked in. Just with this one song, the crowd went from mildly enjoying the band to loud cheering and singing. It was also evident that the band was feeding off of the crowd's energy as they continued to become more confident throughout the night.

Throughout the night, the band tended to move through the fast-paced songs quickly, while elongating some of the slower ones by adding extended outros, tacking on a jam, or including a new guitar solo. These added jams and outros helped the band bring their unique indie rock sound to life, while also making the live version of these songs more distinct. For instance, “Honeybee” seemed to be the crowd favorite of the night yet included no new elements. However, “Honeybee” ended in a fake walk-off that carried the moment of the crowd cheering that seemed to make up for how fast it was over.

With this being a local show for the band, there were elements that don’t happen to an artist not from the city they’re playing in. Singer Blake Comstock made multiple comments about his parents being in attendance, even dedicating certain songs to his mom and dad. About halfway through the show, Blake dedicated one of the slower, more meaningful songs to his mom. The song, “River,” includes the line "Mother, won’t you stop your crying/This is all I’ve ever wanted to do,” creating a special moment when Blake spotted his mom in the crowd and smiled.

In addition, Blake had spoken about playing Crescent Ballroom previously, in which there were only around 80 attendees. Since the crowd had over tripled this number at this show, it truly drove in the feeling of how special this night was. It was also apparent that more friends and family filled the crowd with audience members yelling the names of band members, inside jokes, and even showing off their relations to certain band members.

“Needed You” was the final song, elevated by added guitar solos that made the song punchier than the studio version. Guitar player Carson Miller shined during this final song, both musically and personally. He was able to create new, complicated guitar solos throughout the song and even crowd-surfed at the end of the show.

Moontour put on a really entertaining show on Friday night that showcased why indie rock concerts are superior, while also letting the crowd in on how meaningful the moment was for them. These elements were the perfect mix for an incredibly special night.
