Tom Grennan Closes Off His Headline Tour With A Special Night In Manchester’s Biggest Arena

Over the years Tom Grennan has continued to show time and time again why he is one of the countries most loved vocalists. His recent album Everywhere I Went, Led Me to Where I Didn’t Want to Be is an incredible representation as to where the Londoner is in his immaculate career. This current run of shows for his headline tour has certainly highlighted that he has no intention of slowing down and neither does his loyal army of fans who have packed out arenas all over the UK - the final bow would see him headline Manchester biggest and newest music empire, The Co-Op Live Arena, not only playing but also selling it out.
Being a Scot living in Manchester, it was nice to see tonight’s opening act being from Scotland. Country rising star Rianne Downey has taken her career from busking in the streets of Glasgow to reaching heights thousands can only dream of - from selling out iconic Scottish venues to playing the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury singing alongside Paul Heaton, Rianne is now fully focused on her own work as she gears up to release her debut album The Consequence of Love later in the year when she will also return for her own Manchester headline show in Band On the Wall.
To her set and you can see why there is such an excitement surrounding her music. Her blend of indie and country works beautifully and its shown with the likes of “Lost in Blue” and “Good in Goodbye.” Being from Scotland, of course there was some nods to the stunning homeland - “The Song of Old Glencoe” and “Home” were two standouts the the set given the meaning behind each track. We are in Manchester so the addition of the “Half The World Away” cover was greatly received by those in the venue who all sang their hearts out to such a beautiful rendition of the Oasis classic. All in a stunning performance from someone who I'd say is one of Scotland’s best voices right now and the way Rianne’s career is moving, it’s only a matter of time before the venues she plays get bigger and bigger.

We now turn our attention to tonight’s headliner Tom Grennan - a packed venue ready and waiting for a night of a solid mix of old and new. Kicking off the night with an explosion of confetti and a taste of his new record with “Full Attention” and “Higher” getting the party atmosphere started. You can already tell that this will be a night to remember, the crowd are in fine voice and of course Tom is sounding at his very best.
There is so much to love about a Tom Grennan live show, but the main standout is his stage presence - he controls every inch of the stage and the room, his vocals carry all over any space he plays and that leads what is always such a perfect feel around venues and its such a joy to witness. Songs off his masterpiece debut like “Found What I’ve Been Looking For” and “Royal Highness” are the type of songs that were made for arenas like this and even when you look a little closer in terms of releases, 2021’s “Don’t Break The Heart” brings out a stunning vocal response from the crowd who fully challenge the newly built venues sound effects with their roaring singing.

The energy both on and off stage never halts even for slower songs, being his biggest Manchester show to date it was pretty clear he was aiming to make it his best. A setlist filled with so many classics giving plenty of nods to where he came from bursting on to the scene in 2016 with his debut single “Something In The Water”, hearing that song live gives you a moment of reflection seeing just how far he has come and the incredible fan base he has built along the way - the love can be felt with every word he sings, the looks of joy just beaming across peoples faces can be seen all the way around this mammoth arena, there is one big family feel.

A flurry of covers came mid set as they throws in Ella Henderson’s “Let’s Go Home Together” and “All Goes Wrong” by Chase & Status before throwing in his iconic collab with superstar DJ Calvin Harris, “By Your Side”, a song that turned the entire place into one big summer party vibe - it’s songs like this that show you just how versatile Tom actually is that he can go from indie bangers to creating one of the sounds of the summer, he has one of those voices that can dabble in anything and come out sounding absolutely incredible and it’s exactly why he is so deserving of gigs this size.
The night comes to a close with a single that quickly became one of my favourite Grennan songs and a song that always has such a special feel whenever he plays it live - “Little Bit of Love” comes with such a great meaning and screaming it out at full voice in a sold out arena just rounds off what was already a spectacular night in an even better way. Every single person roaring out their last piece of energy that they had as the room is filled with even more confetti.
Tom Grennan’s rise since his debut in 2016 is truly incredible and it’s all a testament to the hard work and dedication that he as put into his career. From 50 cap rooms and bars to his biggest arena tour in just shy of 10 years is some special and when you see just how happy he looks on stage and the energy he gives off, there doesn’t look like there is any sign of slowing down any time soon. Maybe it’s festivals to start looking at their next headliner, look no further - you’ve found what you’ve been looking for.
