Corbyn Besson Dives Head First Into Debut Ep
Corbyn Besson has finally released his debut EP, HEAD FIRST, marking his first major project since transitioning from the boy band Why Don’t We. Over the last two years, Besson has released tracks previously, but this project is his true mark in the industry. Tracks such as "Blink" (ft. Tzuyu from TWICE), "Summer," and "Tied Up" are previous popular releases that Besson chose to feature on this project. Corbyn has already proved to the industry what he is capable of by accumulating over 40 million global streams in two years, and has created tracks with many well-known artists in the industry.
The project opens with the track ”Kiss”, this song is upbeat and captures the elements of craving that connection before something ends it all. The urgency that we hear from Besson during this track sets the tone of the rest of the EP. The second track on this EP titled “Tied Up” is one of my personal favorites from the previous releases, as it has many elements of a confident, dancey track. Besson has such a variety of tracks that it is truly hard to pick just one favorite. He truly knows how to write a hit track, and “Tied Up” captures that, and it really leans into Besson’s flirty romantic side. This track is about acting on instinct rather than letting overthinking get the best of you, and as he curated this Ep it ends up being the main message of this project. This track blends early 2000s R&B with sleek Pop notes throughout the record. This record lays out the blueprint of what the future of Besson’s career will look like.
Another notable track is “Blink” Featuring Tzuyu from TWICE; this track was also a previous release, but this really set up the blueprint for this project. This track gave listeners an idea of what to expect from the artist as he prepared to create this project, HEAD FIRST as this track contains themes of emotional storytelling and introspective lyrics, it really helped with the transition of singles to a full six track EP, as it felt natural, as Besson is continuing a story.
The second to last track, “RUIN ME” is by far my favorite off of this project for many reasons. This track is about willingly giving someone the emotional power over you because the connection feels right. The post chorus of this song strays away from the EDM themes and instead leans into the pop ballads, allowing emotion to take the stage with this track. The way that Besson presents himself in this track adds to how fans currently see him while building trust for this new chapter. This sound fits Besson naturally, and through his growing discography, it adds emotional depth to what listeners can expect from him moving forward.
HEAD FIRST is a bold reintroduction to who Besson really is in his solo career after Why Don’t We came to an end. This six track EP shows us how Corbyn is making that change into his solo chapter with this bold and confident sound. Besson closes the project with a track titled “HYPNOTIZE”. For fans of SZA, this track might just be for you, as it captures elements similar to her writing style. This track in particular explores themes of surrendering to the romantic pull of just one glance. This track is the perfect way to close out this project and a good introduction to the direction of how Besson is going to define himself in this chapter.
