Don’t Call Your Ex Says Reiyo the Giant in Her New Single

“It’s okay to leave first,” a hypnotic voice calls from the deepest, darkest  waters. That voice belongs to Reiyo the Giant on her newest single, “Can’t Call Me.” 

Self-proclaimed ten foot lesbian genie, Reiyo the Giant is carving a name for herself with her unique blend of soul, R&B, and electronica. Shown first through their 2021 debut EP, Romeo Romeo, Reiyo continues to expand through newer releases. “Can’t Call Me” is the newest in terms of sonic exploration.

If I’m laying it all on the line, I had not heard of Reiyo prior to receiving the offer to review this single. I was really moreso intrigued by the promise of a ten foot lesbian genie from the Bronx and I will really listen to just about anything. What was waiting for me was a track so atmospheric I felt like I was warped away from the car I was in when I first played it. 

The song feels like swimming on a stormy night while a siren circles you. Reiyo’s voice is hypnotic, spellbinding, and confident. There’s confidence behind their conviction of “you made a mess / of what we once called love.” The atmosphericness and haziness of the production builds to the feeling yet keeps it soft, like lapping water.

This single comes ahead of Reiyo’s debut album on November 4th (title not yet released) and was preceded by four other singles. While I didn’t know of Reiyo the Giant before, the promise of an album that explores grief and finding your way back from it intrigues me enough that I’m sure I’ll come back.
