Foo Fighters Are Back With “Your Favorite Toy”
The release of Foo Fighters’ latest album Your Favorite Toy marks their 12th album.
The album comes in at around 40 minutes, with 10 new songs that are led by the first track “Caught in the Echo.” This first track kicks the album off with a fast, loud start with lead singer Dave Grohl showing off his hard rock vocals, while also evoking emotion through harmonies and meaningful lyrics. In this song, it seems that Grohl is battling his own self by stating he “got caught in the echo,” and “some things you can’t decide/some things you can’t define.” “Caught in the Echo” seamlessly leads into the second track “Of All People.” This song carries the high energy levels of “Caught in the Echo,” but focuses more on intricate guitars and punchy drums.
While overall maintaining the usual Foo Fighter’s hard rock sound, Your Favorite Toy explores some new territory for the band in songs like “Window” and “Your Favorite Toy.” “Window” slows the album down by exhibiting an almost indie-rock style, that has softer vocals from Grohl and repetitious guitars that almost entirely support the melody. “Window” is a standout on the album due to being the only one of it’s kind, and is also reminiscent of the band’s earlier work. “Your Favorite Toy,” the title track and lead single, is powered by a strong drum beat in addition to new vocal stylings. These vocals are either spoken, screamed or catchingly sung, and the distortion matches the gritty guitars perfectly.
The album is able to expertly blend each track and have an overarching sound, yet no two songs sound the same. The band is also able to explore new territory with lyrics that reflect struggles with intense thoughts, while also staying true to their usual sound. “Child Actor” is one of the more vulnerable songs that explores struggling with mental health and fame with lines like “was I good enough/was I ever good enough.”
In addition to new vocal styles and vulnerable lyrics, the expertise of every instrument shines on Your Favorite Toy. The guitars and drums shine on every song and make the album what it is. The drums can go from punchy and loud, effectively making the song upbeat, to letting the guitar take the lead and maintaining rhythm. Meanwhile, the guitars are intricate, loud, and stand out on every track. Almost every track has a distinct tone, where some feature a clean tone, some feature a distorted effect, and some feature a typical garage rock sound.
Foo Fighters are coming back full force with Your Favorite Toy. Their world tour kicks off this summer in Europe and goes until January in Australia. They are also promoting this album vigorously with social media posts, podcast features, and are even on SNL UK this upcoming Saturday. Overall, Your Favorite Toy is an incredible album that fills a recent hole in the rock world.
