It’s the “End of an Era” for Niall Horan
The third single off his upcoming June album Dinner Party, “End of an Era” promises to bring a gut punch to the feels with every listen. Per the track list, it is the final track on the album, which seems appropriate given the tone of finality in the lyrics, much like how one would say goodbye at the end of the night.
Niall teased on his Instagram that “End of an Era” needed its own moment before the album dropped and he was exactly right. The song starts out with soft strings and guitar, which already had me bracing for the lyrics. We had it, pure magic / Remembering what it was like / Time passes so fast that / I couldn’t tell you goodbye are the first words sung, and I immediately thought of Horan leaving a relationship, not with a partner but with four other people from his early days in the mega-hit band, One Direction. It’s impossible to not see the parallels between this song and Niall reckoning with not being able to “say goodbye” to his former bandmate, Liam Payne, before his tragic death in October 2024.
Vocally, Horan is at his prime in this song showcasing emotional restraint in his voice while singing about letting go, whether that’s of his memories with his bandmates, a past relationship, or even a past era of himself. The song is emotionally charged throughout the 3:38 minute run time, with tears being shed at multiple points. The lyrics that hit me the most were the pre-chorus of Two strings crying ‘bout coming undone / Shadows laughing ‘bout their days in the sun / Tears fall down like the future comes / Slowly, and then all at once. As an outsider looking in to Horan’s life, you can see the possibilities of this song as a kind of therapy for him while addressing multiple parts of his life, but for someone who has been a fan since he came on the scene in 2010, my heart breaks for the future of what could have been and also the past of what it was.
Ultimately, I think this was Horan’s intention with ending the album with “End of an Era” by showing people that he’s accepted an end of an era of his One Direction days, is now in a loving, committed relationship (who just happens to be the muse for the entire album Dinner Party), and maybe on some level knows that he is now entering a new era without the pressure or “what-if’s” with One Direction and can now focus on himself through his music and personal life. The entire album Dinner Party comes out on June 5th.
