Kicking His Feet, Ruel Releases Sophomore Album

Singer-songwriter Ruel has officially stepped into the next chapter of his career releasing his sophomore album Kicking My Feet. On August  21st, 2025, Vandijk announced to fans that his album, Kicking My Feet, will be released on October 17th. The album will feature eight new, unreleased tracks, with tracks such as “I Can Die Now”, “In The Suburbs” andWild Guess” already released. This album is a fresh start on Vandijk’s new music journey after coming back from writing his debut album Fourth Wall. Some of my favorite records on this project are “I Can Die Now”, “Destroyer”, “Even Angels Won’t”, and “Only Ever”.

To open the album, the track “Only Ever” brings a fun sound to this new chapter. Vandijk sings about not being able to move on from someone. This particular track really breaks down into Vandijk’s usual sound and it is refreshing to hear. There is one lyric in this song that states “No matter what I do, it’s only ever about you.” Vandijk’s  writing style takes a new style as this current chapter creates a new beginning into the pop music scene and away from the R&B- Soul music scene.

“Destroyer” is a reflective song that dives into the complicated ideas of being in a relationship that you know you shouldn’t be in no matter how much it pains you. The song gives fans an emotional track that captures the cycle of love through love, self blame and being exhausted. The song brings in many relatable moments for those who have been in a similar situation and it really sets the tone of how it is to be in a toxic relationship with someone whether that is a friendship or a relationship.

Vandijk’s creative songwriting skills are captured in the following tracks, "The Suburbs” and “I Can Die Now and Wild Guess,” which are some of the more upbeat songs on this record. Vandijk not only paints pictures in listeners' minds by using imagery and metaphors but adds a beat that will always be running in the back of your mind after that first listen. These catchy beats are not the only thing that grabs listeners, but it is the fans who have been here since the beginning and have supported his growth in the industry.

The closing track of the album “Kicking My Feet” is the title track of the album. This track is a heartfelt slow track setting the scene of being stuck in between two chapters of life. The song conveys an emotional theme of how it feels to be growing up but also learning how to navigate the stillness after a storm. This track can also be interpreted as a way to figure out who you are in the midst of heartbreak and pain.

This album really has placed Ruel back on the industry map and as a long time fan it makes me truly so happy to see that he is still creating music that he loves even as he is kicking his feet.
